Driving rules in Spain

  • Drive your hire car on the right in Spain, overtaking left. Head anti-clockwise around roundabouts.
  • The speed limit on motorways and dual carriageways is 120km/h (74mph) and 60km/h (37mph) is the minimum speed limit on autopistas.
  • At junctions, vehicles approaching from the right have priority.

Parking in Spain

  • Parking is sometimes free in Spain during siesta hours – so, between 2pm and 4pm. On Sunday, some parking charges are removed.
  • Signs reading ‘Prohibido Estacionamiento’ or showing a large ‘E’ with a diagonal line mean ‘no parking’.
  • Rectangular or square signs with a white border and the letter ‘P’ signal that on-street parking is allowed.

Key roads in Spain

  • European route 5 (E-5) (R-2) connects Madrid to northern and southern Spain. Its southern end lies at Algeciras on the Bay of Gibraltar. Seville, Burgos and Bilbao all lie close to the route.
  • Autopista AP-7 (AP-7), or the Mediterranean Highway, is a major highway that runs along Spain’s eastern coast from La Jonquera to Barcelona, Valencia, Alicante and Vera. The road appears again near Malaga.
  • Radial motorways, marked ‘R’, surround the capital city, Madrid.

Toll roads and charges in Spain

There are more than a dozen toll highways, including autopistas and autovias, in Spain. These are common close to major cities such as Madrid and Barcelona.

How to get from Madrid to Granada in Spain

It takes four hours to drive the 420 miles from Madrid to Grenada.

  • Leave the Hertz car hire car park at Madrid Airport and join M-14 (E-5), heading south.
  • Follow E-5 as it merges with M-40 and veers left to become A-4.
  • Turn left on to A-44 (E-902). Use this road to pass Jaen.
  • Follow signs for Grenada to join Calle Neptuno, which heads into the historic capital of Moorish Andalusia.
