An edgy and vibrant northern capital, Manchester ticks all the boxes when it comes to a cultural trip away.

The city has an upbeat energy that surges through the streets, tantalising visitors with its eclectic music and arts scene, museums, art galleries, festivals and shopping.

It is famed for its football teams, legendary musical talent, great architecture, a weighty media presence and Coronation Street.

We have drawn together some of the top activities and places to visit:

Northern Quarter

For fans of independent eating, shopping and lifestyle head to the Northern Quarter - self-styled and creative, this unique area is crammed full of all things hip and happening.

Drop into the Manchester Craft & Design Centre for locally made jewellery and accessories, Affleck's Palace for indie commerce or maybe get steamy at the Bikram Lounge with a 'hot yoga' class.

Musical talent

Manchester has produced award-winning musical talent from artists such as The Smiths, Oasis, and The Stone Roses, and continues to nurture a creative and eclectic scene.

You can find independent music venues on almost every corner so this is the city to catch a live gig. Why not try out Gorilla, a fashionable outfit located under the railway arches on Whitworth Street, or for a more lived-in vibe test out the not-for-profit Band on the Wall, an institution that attracts international music from all over the world.

Centre stage

When it comes to the theatre you are spoiled for choice in Manchester. For a true taste of the city's heritage, head to The Royal Exchange in St Ann's Square, a baroque style building that dates back to the 1800s with its seats arranged in an amphitheatre style.

Actors Hugh Grant, Kate Winslet and David Tennant all performed here before breaking into TV and film.

Hidden gems

Experience the architectural splendour of an Edwardian-listed swimming pool - Victoria Baths. Recently restored after a movement to save it from ruins, the baths are now a much-loved city treasure.

Tourists should consider hiring a car in Manchester to experience the best of this incredible city. We offer various pick-up points for your convenience, including centrally located Piccadilly Station.
