San Diego is unsurprisingly one of the most popular areas for tourists in the state of California, offering sun, sea and sand, as well as an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. What's not to love?! In fact, the city has over 70 miles of stunning coastline so that, teamed with the persistent warm weather, attracts people year-round.

So which beaches are the best in San Diego? We've decided to share five of our favourites, so you won't miss out during your trip.

Coronado Beach
Coronado's shoreline is renowned for being Marilyn Monroe's classic film encounter, Some Like it Hot, which makes it pretty special indeed. It's effectively an island, with San Diego Bay nestled between its beaches and the main coastline. It's a very romantic beach - it glistens all year due to the mineral Mica in the sand.

Imperial Beach
South from here and close to the Mexican border is Imperial Beach. There's a huge amount that goes on - most wonderfully, the US Open Sandcastle Competition takes place here every July. It draws in hundreds of thousands of spectators and creates a party atmosphere over the weekend, with a street fair on the Saturday and the main event on the Sunday.

Mission Beach
This beach begins at the Mission Bay Channel entrance and ends at the north end of Pacific Beach. There's lots to do here with two miles of pristine coastline; you can enjoy the boardwalk, shop along the Strand, play beach volleyball, ride the giant rollercoaster and surf.

La Jolla Beaches

Known as 'The Jewel' of San Diego, La Jolla rivals Rodeo Drive in Los Angeles. The coastline has a lot to offer, from 300 foot sea cliffs to rocky reefs and sand coves. Go exploring, try a watersport or simply relax in the beautiful scenery. They're located further north in the city.

Silver Strand
Silver Strand State Beach is the ideal spot for oceanfront RV camping. It's great for a number of sports, offering plenty to do, and often has barbecue pits, picnic tables and fire rings available for use. This is a fantastic way to enjoy the delights that San Diego has to offer with its calming, chilled out atmosphere.

With these gorgeous coastal offerings, it's no wonder that the city is hugely popular. Are you looking to go? Getting around by car in San Diego couldn't be easier, and this will also give you the opportunity to explore not only the beaches but the rest of San Diego too.
