There is a point in the cold British winter where the nights seem to drag on, the days aren’t much brighter than the nights and the nip in the air is more a full-on pinch. If you’re with us in thinking it gets a little repetitive, why not break up the drudgery of winter in the UK and take to the warmer climates of Europe this spring. Treat yourself to a little sunshine and some much needed vitamin D this year, with our list of European destinations to brighten up your springtime.

Lisbon, Portugal

Spread over even hills, Lisbon has stunning views of the city and seascapes in abundance. Here where the temperature rarely drops below 15 degrees, this historical city will give you some well-deserved relief from the long British winter.  Take in some authentic Lisbon culture and visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site Mosteiro dos Jerónimos for some 16th century architectural brilliance. With close access to the beautiful Portuguese countryside, why not make the drive out and enjoy the tranquillity of nature.

Barcelona, Spain

Founded by the Romans, Barcelona’s rich and colourful history is reflected in the beautiful architecture throughout the city. Visit Antonio Gaudi’s La Sagrada Familia Basilica, the giant Basilica that has remained under construction since 1882. Uncover the quirky vibrancy of La Rambla, Barcelona’s most famous street and be entertained by the street performers, or indulge in some retail therapy.

Nice, France

Nestled into the foothills of the Alps and sitting on the beautiful waters of the French Riviera, Nice is the idyllic location to enjoy the glamour of the city or explore the peacefully secluded villages  in the mountains. Take a meandering walk along the promenades, with sweeping seascapes on one side and the quaint cafes and bars on the other. Spend an evening losing yourself in the historical streets of the old town, and explore all the quirks and characteristics this fantastic city has to offer.

Rome, Italy

A city of undeniably high class and culture, Rome is a quintessential travel destination famed for its beauty, ancient history, stunning architecture and world famous vibrancy of character. Take a trip to the Colosseum, the world’s most iconic amphitheatre, or visit the epic artwork of the Trevi Fountain.  Savour every moment and indulge in some local Italian cuisine whilst you explore the labyrinth-like back streets of this stunning, welcoming city.

Fuerteventura, Canary Islands

With more than 150km of sandy beaches gracing its shores, Fuerteventura is an ideal springtime seaside destination. After relaxing on the sandy beaches and taking a dip in the crystal clear turquoise waters, hire a car and take a drive further inland to explore the island’s UNESCO Biosphere reserve. Visit one of the many viewpoints to take in panoramic vistas of the island, or discover some ancient history and explore the archaeologically rich sacred mountains of Tindaya.

So until the weather warms up, enjoy a little bit of early relief from those winter blues, take the chance to start spring in the right way and explore one of these fantastic European destinations.
