Stop 2: Aqueduct of Segovia 2/14
An incredible relic of the Roman Empire, the Aqueduct of Segovia is a true testament to an ancient civilisation that once reigned supreme in this region. The towering arches were designed to carry water between Sierra and Segovia – although legend has it that the real reason was to bargain with the devil. Even after thousands of years, the structure is still the pride and joy of local Segovians. Climb to the top of the stairs for a majestic view of the city below.

Stop 3: Alcázar of Segovia 3/14
With its ornate turrets and towers, the Alcázar of Segovia looks like it’s been lifted straight from the pages of a fairy tale – in fact, it’s said to have inspired Walt Disney’s iconic Cinderella castle. The magic continues inside, with intricately painted murals, opulent stained-glass and elaborate ceilings throughout. Book tickets in advance to climb the 152-step spiral staircase or sign up for a guided tour to learn about the history of this former medieval fortress.

Stop 4: Burgos cathedral 4/14
Burgos Cathedral was hundreds of years in the making – and the results speak for themselves. Prepare to be entranced by its stunning spires, intricately painted ceilings and detailed carvings in the centuries-old stone. Every corner of this grand cathedral has something to discover, from the Chapel of Relics featuring decadent depictions of the saints and a striking gold altar, to the Golden Ladder – an elaborately decorated staircase that served as inspiration for the Paris Opera.

Stop 5: Restaurante Sotopalacios 5/14
Burgos is renowned for its traditional Spanish cuisine, including creamy local cheese and morcilla, a black pudding sausage. Of all the many spots to eat in the city, Restaurante Sotopalacios is the pick of the places to sample these authentic flavours. Reserve a table at this bright, airy venue and enjoy an elegant dinner surrounded by blooming gardens. Little ones are sure to love it here too, with a spacious play gym on site. In 2007, the old buildings of Vitoria were transformed forever, when artists collaborated to create stunning murals for all to enjoy. You can now sign up for guided tours to view these masterpieces and learn how the project came together. Volunteers worked eight hours a day to create these vibrant artworks, from the stunning ‘Thread of Time’ mural depicting intricately detailed cloth designs to ‘The Shortest Night’, inspired by a pagan festival on a warm Midsummer’s Eve. Be sure to bring your camera.

Stop 7: Guggenheim Museum 7/14
Bilbao truly embraces the arts, with a plethora of avant-garde buildings and experimental architecture to enjoy throughout the city. Take a walk along the Calatrava Bridge, a wonder of modern structural design, before heading to the world-famous Guggenheim Museum. The titanium-clad curves of the iconic structure have won international acclaim. Step inside to see contemporary art that pushes the boundaries, ranging from paintings to sculptures and large-scale installations. With clear azure blue waters and golden sand, La Concha Bay is an idyllic stop on your road trip around Spain. Relax on the beach and then wander down the promenade for glittering views out to the Bay of Biscay. Stop 9: Cathedral of Royal Saint Mary 9/14
This beautiful Gothic structure, situated in the middle of Pamplona’s streets, is a sight to behold. Nestled amongst the colourful townhouses, it’s housed in the oldest part of what was once the Roman Pompaelo. Take in the stunning 13th-century cloister, inspired by French Gothic architecture, and seek out the stunning figure of the Virgin of Santa Maria at the high altar. The past kings of the Navarre region knelt before it when swearing their oaths.

Stop 10: Logroño 10/14
Logroño is renowned for its historic landmarks but also its shopping scene – making it the perfect stop-off for culture vultures who enjoy a spot of retail therapy. Plan a visit to Cubo de Revellín, a fortified area of the city built in the 16th century, to uncover the stories of military heroes. Once you’ve soaked up the history, head to Calle del Laurel, Logroño’s rainbow-coloured main street which is lined with shops, cafes and al fresco tables.

Stop 11: Cathedral-Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar 11/14
Overlooking the Ebro River, the city of Zaragoza looks like a dreamland. The iconic Cathedral Basilica is a famous pilgrimage site featuring an impressive shrine to the Virgin Mary. Made up of a series of domes, it’s an architectural wonder and a beautiful, almost ethereal sight, when gazed upon from across the river. The cathedral is just the first stop on the city’s cultural trail, with a number of Mudéjar-style landmarks, such as the 11th-century Aljafería palace, waiting to be admired.
