The small city of Wausau stands on the Wisconsin River in the state of Wisconsin in the United States' Great Lakes area, just south of the Canadian border. The city is served by two local airports - Central Wisconsin Airport in nearby Mosinee, and Wausau Downtown Airport, only a mile south of the city centre. If you've hired a car in Wausau you're only a short drive away from the beauty of nearby Rib Mountain - with its scenic trails and a very popular ski slope complex - as well as plenty of green space and many galleries and museums to enjoy.
If you pick up a hire car you'll be able to explore Wausau and its surroundings. Wausau itself is a native Indian word meaning 'faraway place' and the city itself spreads across both sides of the river. You'll be able to drive to a selection of parks, forests and nature reserves on the outskirts or learn more about the area's agricultural heritage at rural attractions, like the modern Van Der Geest dairy farm that's open to the public or the Antique Farm Machinery Museum. Look out too for the Yawkey House Museum, a fine example of a wealthy timber trader's house from 100 years ago.
