Whichever direction you head from Sanford Airport, there’s plenty to do in and around the historic city and wider area. Rent a car at Sanford Airport and easily uncover these great attractions.
Explore the great lakes
Two significant bodies of water surround Sanford; Lake Monroe to the north and Lake Jesup to the south. Both of these have their own conservation areas and are connected via St Johns River, which eventually runs into the Atlantic Ocean near Jacksonville.
There are countless ways to explore both the lakes and the wetlands surrounding them. Lots of hiking trails provide the perfect way to get in among the trees for a spot of shade and the chance to see wildlife ranging from deer and songbirds to turtles and possibly the odd alligator.
Alternatively, jump on one of the boat tours and get out on the water. A safe distance from the jaws of any local snappers, it’s a less strenuous way to enjoy 360-degree views across the lake. Step back in time with an old-fashioned steamboat tour or be daring and rent a kayak for a more active experience.
Delve into Sanford’s history
Wander around downtown Sanford and you’ll soon start to soak up the vibes from the city’s yesteryear. Book onto one of thewalking tours for a great introduction to the important people and places throughout its history. You’ll pass through the historically important suburbs of Georgetown and Goldsboro, learning about the city’s military history, as well as along the waterfront and through various parks.
Sanford Museum is the other main historic attraction. Items from the city’s founding father – Henry Shelton Sanford – are proudly displayed, with exhibits covering the local naval air station, agriculture, business and celebrities. Entry is free and the museum is open five days a week (excluding Sundays and Mondays).
Dine out in style
One of the first things you’ll notice in downtown Sanford is the fantastic array of restaurants nestled in and around the old buildings. Flavours from across the globe can be tasted, starting with the German cuisine served up at Hollerbach’s Willow Tree Café. Schnitzel, authentic bratwurst and deli meats continue to make it a local favourite.
Indulge in some spicy Mexican dishes at El Zocalo or opt for Jamaica’s finest food exports at Negril Spice. For something more American, the Colonial Room or Fuel BBQ have menus filled with meaty burgers, brisket and burnt ends.
Wash it all down at Palate Coffee Brewery. Unlike the chains you get in every city across the world, volunteers run this unique coffee house with a mission to eradicate global human trafficking, which is where all its profits go. Find it on West 2nd Street.
Take a day trip to Daytona
Around an hour’s drive on the east coast is Daytona Beach. The retro arcades and shop fronts which line the shores add an element of charm hard to find elsewhere in Florida. Its main attraction is the International Speedway, where you can book a tour and look around the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America.
Get a great view over the city and Florida at Ponce Inlet Lighthouse – the tallest in the state at 175 feet. Or take a relaxing stroll along the boardwalk and pier, grabbing a bite to eat at one of the crab shacks and a refreshing ice cream to cool off when the Florida sun is beating down.
Hire a car at Sanford Airport and you’ll find it easy to explore the attractions in Sanford and beyond.
