Packed full of American history, Sacramento perfectly blends old and new, so if you’re wanting to learn about the gold rush or catch an America football game at Hornet Stadium you can.
The State Capitol
The gleaming dome of the neo-classical state capitol building is Sacramento’s most iconic sight. Step inside the wedding-cake-white façade for a tour of the historic headquarters of the Californian government and then enjoy the 40 acres of formal parkland outside. It’s dotted with monuments, statues, fountains and picnic spots.
The Old Town and attractions
Visit the Old Town and Capitol Mall districts to find some of the best attractions of the city. The renovated old buildings and wooden pavements along the leafy bank of the Sacramento River are worth a leisurely stroll – they date back to the days of the Gold Rush - and you can devote a whole day to the collection at the California Museum, which tells the story of the state.
Nearby a restored riverboat offers cruises, meals and overnight stays and horse-drawn carriages potter around the streets giving rides to tourists. You’ll find walking tours given by guides in period costumes here and even a historic steam railway offering scenic trips. Head to the California Automobile Museum to see a collection of over 150 vehicles throughout history. With cars from 1885 up to the modern day, you can see how this industry has progressed and moved towards the current today.
If you’re looking for something a bit different from the history and museums of Sacramento, head the city’s zoo. Opened in 1927, the zoo is now home to over 600 animals with an aim on education, conservation and recreation. From Gibbons to Jaguars, Lizards to Turtles, this zoo can provide a pleasant and educational day out.
Further afield
Sacramento may not have the Pacific, but it does offer Folsom Lake State Recreation Area – a huge reservoir in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. It’s a short drive east from the city and is a popular area for hiking, biking, running, camping, horse riding and water sports, ranging from fishing to water-skiing.
