Vetlanda is a country market town in the southern Swedish highlands about 6 miles from the Baltic coast and almost equi-distant from the three major Swedish cities, Stockholm, Malmö and Gothenburg, which are each 2 miles away. Like many Swedish towns it stands next to a river and the lakes Grumlan and Norrasjön. Hiring a car in Vetlanda is the best way to tour these outlying areas. One of the best spots to aim for is Ädelfors, 12 miles east. A beautiful stone house here houses the acclaimed mining museum which includes a collection of 7, minerals.
It's generally a modern low-rise community with a big open square in front of the red brick town hall but there are highlights to discover - and that becomes a lot easier if you hire a car in Vetlanda. The old red brick Vetlanda Museum, for example, is more like an art gallery, with regularly changing exhibitions of contemporary Swedish arts, crafts and design. Explore the central Forngårdens Park, with its popular mini golf course or the folk museum, with its beautifully restored old cottages.
