The small town of Ulricehamn has grown at the point where the River Ätran flows into the upper reaches of Lake Åsunden. It's a scenic spot surrounded by woods and water and makes hiring a car in Ulricehamn a good choice if you wish to explore this beautiful area. In winter the town becomes a popular ski spot, with seven lifts and six slopes plus 13 miles of cross-country skiing trails surrounding the town and regular ice-skating on the lake. Other attractions to look out for include the Torpa stenhus (stately home), the bathing park on the lakeshore and summer sightseeing boat trips.
Buildings dating back to the 17th-century give Ulricehamn an attractive historic atmosphere. The 1789 ochre-painted town hall overlooking the cobbled market square is a particular architectural highlight. If visitors hire a car in Ulricehamn it becomes easy to tour all the points of interest in the town. Look out for the leafy waterfront, jetties and wooden walkways along the edge of the lake, including a spa and open-air swimming pool. Take time to wander the town's pretty old shopping streets, which are mostly pedestrianised and follow the routes of historic bridleways. Other highlights include the Timmele Inn, now a local history museum, and Stadsparken open-air folk museum.
