Trollhätten-Vänersborg Airport is a small local airfield standing on flat ground between the two towns in southwest Sweden. It's a single-runway airfield with a humble passenger terminal that has a café and there's free airport parking. It stands amid farmland and industrial units on the south bank of the Göta Canal at the southern end of Lake Vanern, about 50 miles north of Gothenburg. Travellers who pick up a hire car at Trollhätten-Vänersborg Airport find the road connections are good. The airport access road leads to the National Route 44 heading north to Vänersborg, about six miles away. The E45 trunk road leads south to Trollhätten, about three miles away.
The airport and its two neighbouring towns stand at the point that shipping can leave the enormous Lake Vänern heading south towards the sea. If you hire a car, it's easy to explore both towns. Vänersborg's 19th-century grid pattern heart leads to an attractive waterfront on the Lake with beaches and promenades. The busy Göta waterway is an attraction too: there are huge locks and waterfalls created by hydro-electric plants at Trollhätten. The new Innovatum Area is housed in the former industrial zone. It includes innovative visitor attractions like the Science Centre, Saab Car Museum, a cable car ride and Trollhättan Art Gallery.
