The small town of Smålandsstenar stands alongside the river Nissan in southern central Sweden, about an equal distance from the cities of Malmo and Gothenburg. Visitors who rent a car in Smalandsstenar can visit the natural attractions of this largely rural area, including any of the six local nature reserves or the popular Lake Bolmen, for fishing, canoeing and trekking. Further afield head for the wilderness of Store Mosse National Park, the largest unspoilt wetland area south of Lapland and a great place to spot cranes perform their mating dance in spring.
If you hire a car in Smålandsstenar you can easily explore all the local attractions. Start by finding one of the region's most notable ancient monuments in the town's Villstad Park, where there are five prehistoric stone circles, dating back around 2,500 years. The park itself is one of Sweden's oldest and contains seven historic buildings among the gardens. The town also boasts the Horsjobadet outdoor lido in a pleasure park. Elsewhere look out for two landmark local businesses: the town's Gosta patisserie stands alongside the river and has become an institution among locals since 1936, and Ingemars is a showroom that only sells American cars.
