Säter is a very small city in mid-Sweden that's found 12 miles northwest of the capital Stockholm. Säter stands on Lake Ljustern, 15 miles southeast of the bigger city of Borlange. If you hire a car in Säter it will allow you to explore the Dalarna region of mountains, woods and valleys - Sweden's equivalent of our 'Dales'. Its beautiful surrounding make the region a popular summer tourist area for camping, fishing and trekking which is why many Swedes own a holiday home in the Dalarna area.
Säter became renowned throughout Sweden for having the largest mental hospital in the country. There's now a museum at the imposing old hospital and it has proven to be an unlikely success with tourists, showing some of the ways patients were treated in the past. Car hire in Säter makes it easy to visit this sobering attraction, along with the other sights of the city and its immediate vicinity. The town itself dates back to 1630 and many of its original red-painted wooden buildings have remained from that time. The pretty old church and town hall are particular landmarks.
