If you hire a car in the city of Örnsköldsvik you will be able to explore the section of Sweden's east shore known as The High Coast. Örnsköldsvik stands on an inlet at the northern end of this stretch of spectacular cliffs, which have been declared a World Heritage site. The main E4 trunk road up the east coast passes through the city; drivers can follow it southwards to visit the Skuleskogen National Park and cross the magnificent Höga Kusten suspension bridge. Inland, the area is characterised by thick forests and small rural communities with only small areas of farming. Örnsköldsvik's airport is 15 miles northeast of the city.
Örnsköldsvik has grown up on the hills behind its small harbour. Ferries take tourists to the unspoilt islands nearby. If you rent a car in Örnsköldsvik you'll find there are plenty of sporting facilities: skiing, curling and ice hockey are popular here, and there's even a ski jump near the city centre. Örnsköldsvik is also a summer resort with its own beach, a notable waterpark that includes one of Europe's longest water slides and a new golf course. The Gene Fornby is the most popular attraction inland - it's a reconstructed iron-age village featuring costumed warriors and authentic meals.
