You'll find Motala's old Central Station on Platensgatan just to the east of the town centre. The station building faces the small ‘railway' park in front along with an area for buses and taxis, and there's a car park to the side. Just behind the station is the Motala Ström waterway that forms part of the Göta Canal system that runs through the heart of this southern Swedish town. If you hire a car from Motala Station, you'll find the station access road leads right to the important Vadstenavägen Bridge giving access to all areas of the city. The R50 north-south route is close by too.
Motala stands on the eastern shore of Lake Vättern and has been an important inland port on the Swedish canal system. Today the Göta Canal is mainly a tourist attraction, with trips in historic steamboats through picturesque locks and unspoilt countryside. If you hire a car at Motala Station though, it's easy to explore the city by road. Look out for the Motor Museum, which displays all sorts of technological items from the last century and the old whitewashed stone church, dating back to the 13th century. The town's museum is housed in the pretty Charlottenborg Manor amongst the trees on the shore of the Motala Ström.
