The tiny town of Markaryd stands in the province of Smaland in southern Sweden, very near the border with Halland and Skane. If you hire a car in Markaryd, you'll discover the town is surrounded by farmland and forests. It's a noted communications centre and stands on the main E4 route that leads down to Helsingborg and Denmark or up towards Stockholm. To the west is the historic village of Knäred where a stone commemorates a famous peace treaty between Sweden and Denmark in 1613. The stone is what the leaders lent upon to write their names.
Markaryd is an important spot in Swedish history, as it once stood on the border with Denmark and for centuries was an important point for transport and communications. The old red-painted post office building from 1862 has been preserved in the town to commemorate the postal heritage here. If you hire a car in Markaryd you can drive to one of the most popular family attractions in the region, just outside the town. It's called Smålandet Markaryds Älgsafari and allows visitors to drive through an enclosed two-mile forest road full with tame elk.
