Linköping's Central Station stands alongside the Stangan River just to the north east of the city centre. The old 19th-century station building is painted a yellow ochre colour and faces an open area for buses, bikes, taxis and car parking which in turn joins a dual carriageway running past the complex. If you hire a car here in Linköping you'll see that this Jamvagsgatan is a major road through the city. The old city centre is just a couple of blocks to the west and Jamvagsgatan makes it easy to join the major trunk roads around the outskirts of the city.
In this big, spreading city it's hard to explore without hiring a car in Linköping. The old quarter is worth visiting so you can see preserved streets like Hunnebergsgatan as well as taking a trip to see the castle. The ‘Domkyrka' is the tallest building in Linköping and is also the city's cathedral and the Cathedral's three steeples dominate the skyline. The Östergötlands Art Museum is one of oldest in Sweden and definitely worth a visit. The more modern districts of the city feature contemporary art galleries as well as shopping malls. Further afield, tourists usually visit the old locks on the Gota and Kinda canals where period steamships make their way through leafy countryside.
