You'll find Kristinehamn's old central rail station on Stationsgatan just north of the city centre. There's a tree-lined area in front of the station for buses, bikes, taxis and car parking. If you arrange to pick up a hire car here you'll find that the station access road leads directly towards the city centre and crosses the Karlstadsvägen dual carriageway. This major road in turn enables quick road access to the E18 highway running across the north of the city and provides easy driving links to the cities of Karlstad and Örebro.
Kristinehamn is positioned on Lake Vänern, one of the biggest inland waters in Europe. The city grew as a port and is located where two rivers reach the lake. You can easily tour this watery landscape if you collect a hire car in Kristinehamn. The best-known sight is Picasso's landmark statue. It's 15-metres-high and stands on the shore of Vänern. Other attractions near Kristinehamn include the Järsberg Runestone, a red granite column decorated with Viking carvings dating as far back as the 6th-century. And Alvön, the eastern island known for its excellent walking trails.
