Kiruna Airport occupies a flat strip of wild countryside between lakes and rocky outcrops about four miles southeast of the town itself. The airport serves a sparsely populated region of northern Sweden. If you take up car hire from Kiruna Airport, the access road leads from the terminal straight to the E10 trunk road which heads straight into Kiruna, or allows you to drive southeast all the day to the Gulf of Bothnia. There are plenty of areas to go hiking in Kiruna, so you may need to pack some walking boots.
Kiruna is Sweden's most northerly town, 90 miles north of the Arctic Circle. If you hire a car from Kiruna Airport you'll see that it stands in a remote mountainous region, surrounded by a mix of barren land and forest. The town is a centre for iron ore mining and space research. Tourism is important too - visitors come to experience local Sami culture and activities, winter sports and summer adventures. The midnight sun and Northern Lights are big draws to the area and it's also an area for manufacturers to test new cars. Every year a popular Ice Hotel is built in the woods about ten miles outside the town.
