The city of Kalmar stands on Sweden's south-eastern Baltic coast, directly opposite the island of Oland. The only bridge crossing the four-mile-wide Kalmar Strait to this large island leaves from Kalmar. Hiring a car in Kalmar is one of the best ways to the popular tourist attraction of Oland. The island is renowned for its unspoilt habitats, ancient castles and traditional farms and has been designated a World Heritage site. But there are attractions near to Kalmar on the mainland too, like the Hallagården Animal Park, the old round church in Hagby and the scenic Stensö beach and recreation area.
The Oland Bridge may lead tourists off to the island but back on the mainland, Kalmar itself has plenty to see. If you rent a car it's easy to tour round attractions like the romantic Kalmar Castle and baroque Cathedral that dominates the old cobbled Main Square. Wander the old part of the city to find rows of pretty cottages on narrow streets and discover waterfront views of the castle. Drive further to find a selection of beaches, the city art museum, maritime museum and the impressively intact old Västerport or West Gate to the fortified city.
