Gdansk is a city on the north coast of Poland, famous for its old town which is home to the city's major landmarks such as St John's Church, the Great Mill and the Great Armoury, and is itself one of the oldest cities in Poland. The Gdansk region is also well known for processing the vast quantities of amber, (a gem which changes colour depending on how old it is),which is found along the coast. As Poland's major sea port, the city has benefitted from centuries of strong trade along the European shipping routes.
Hire a car in Gdansk during the summer and we'd definitely recommend making your way to the Shakespeare Festival. This is an international theatre festival that is held every August to celebrate the work of world-famous playwright William Shakespeare as well as his Elizabethan contemporaries.
With three different universities in the city, this part of Poland excels in its academic aspirations. As a hub of student activity, there's plenty to appeal to a young audience, as well as many educational museums and galleries to indulge your taste in culture. Check out the Museum of Modern Art set inside Abbots Palace to see some beautiful paintings and sculptures from around the world.
