Oersta Volda airport stands among the World Heritage fjord district about halfway up the Norwegian west coast, around 225 miles north of Bergen and 21 south of Trondheim. The airport is between the villages of Oersta and Volda, about three miles from each and on the E39 coast road. The visitors who hire a car in Oersta Volda will soon find that it's surrounded by the most spectacular coastal scenery. The attractions include mountain trails like the one up Rotsethornet, with permanent chains and steps to help reach a memoral viewing point. Further afield you'll find the historic waterfront town of Aalesund and the protected environment of the mountainous Geiranger-Hardalen conservation area.
It helps to hire a car in Oersta Volda because then you can tour the local sights. The number one attraction must be the landscape, but after that there are some special things worth visiting. Start with the Ivar Assen Centre in Orsta. It's a classy interactive literature museum, café and shop housed in a modern building that has won architecture prizes. The open-air folk museums at Brudavoltunet and Volda have collections of historic rural buildings, and the two Orsta and Volda Ski centres are great gateways to the slopes and trails of the Sunnmore Alps or to a network of bike trails during the summer. And high above Orsta on the mountain you'll find the remains of stone Bronze Age labyrinths known as The Julian Castle and Isflåborga.
