Trysil is a mountainous district of eastern Norway running alongside the Swedish border. The centre of the region is the village of Innbygda. It lies about 12 miles north east of Oslo. It's a sparsely populated area dominated by north-south valleys, rivers and small lakes. The whole district is a popular tourist destination with plenty of opportunities for winter sports during the snowy seasons and fishing, rafting, biking, hiking and canoeing in the summer. There is also a selection of golf courses across the Trysil region, perfect excuse to hire a car in Trysil to transport your essential sports equipment on your trip.
Confusingly the Trysilfjellet mountain area has been given the name Trysil by the Skistar company that run the extensive ski centre in the heart of the district. Whatever it's called though, if you hire a car here it's easy to explore the four connected skiing zones with 31 lifts and 68 pistes for all levels. This is Norway's largest skiing resort. Trysil is believed to be the site of the first-ever skiing race in 1862 and the oldest skiing club. Other attractions in the area include the Kongeparken in Nybergsund, where memorials show the spot that the Norwegian royal family hid from German bombing in the Second World War. There's also a popular local folk, craft and history museum in the village.
