Osteroey is an island off the west coast of Norway, 3 miles north of Bergen. It covers almost 1 square miles and features mountains over 2,8ft high. Osteroey is surrounded by fjords but is connected to the mainland by one modern bridge at the southern tip. The Osterøy Bridge is one of the longest suspension spans in Norway. If you hire a car in Osteroey you can explore the whole sparsely populated island and the steep shores of the Osterfjorden and Sorfjorden fjords surrounding it. The historic city of Bergen and the picturesque Linda peninsular are both easy day trips from Osteroey.
Northern Europe's second-biggest island is a good place to explore by hiring a car in Osteroey. The open-air displays at Osteroey Museum in Lonevåg include old farm buildings and island handicrafts, and the museum at the Herlandsfoss hydroelectric plant commemorates the transformation in islanders' lives when electricity arrived almost 100 years ago. The renowned 19th-century 'Kossdal Road' from Hole to Svanheim winds through the scenery of a beautiful valley. You'll have to walk or ride this stone trail though as cars aren't allowed. Other highlights include the old stone church at Hosanger and the even older wooden one at Hamre.
