The small town of Mosjøen stands on the E6 trunk road heading north at the head of Vefsnfjord in northern Norway. Visitors who hire a car in Mosjøen can tour the area's scenery of water, forests and mountains. Further afield, the city of Bodø is 2 miles north, right on the edge of the country. Mosjøen Airport is about five miles south of the town which makes for the perfect entry point. Mountains rise up from the outskirts of the town and Oyfjellet to the west of the town is the best-known local peak.
If you arrive and hire a car in Mosjøen, your first impressions might be seeing one of Europe's biggest aluminium factories and the big and busy cargo port. But Mosjøen has plenty more for visitors to see. It is famous for the Sjøgata, or 'Sea Street', which runs along the banks of the Vefsna. This has the biggest collection of historic wooden buildings in northern Norway and is now a tourist area of restored boathouses and piers, with attractive restaurants, galleries and shops. The Vefsn Museum and Kulturverkstedet arts centre are both here too. Two popular 18th-century attractions are the beautifully restored wooden Fru Haugans Hotel in the town centre, the oldest hotel in northern Norway, and the red octagonal Dolstad Church. The town's park is considered one of the finest in Norway.
