Around 4 miles northwest of the Norwegian capital, you'll find the town of Honefoss spread on either bank of the Storelva River amid rolling green countryside. It's the centre of the Ringerike district of green hills, farmland and lakes. Head south to find Lake Tyrifjorden and river waterfalls, head north to see Randsfjorden and the pretty old wooden farms around Jevnaker, where there's a wonderful old museum in a wood pulp mill.
If you hire a car in Honefoss you'll soon find that the main E16 north-to-south highway runs through the town. Or follow the historic Old Royal Bergen Road to Sundvollen to explore the Krokskogen Forest and the 'King's View', considered one of the country's finest panoramas.
Visitors who hire a car in Honefoss will soon find the town is built across a complex geography of two winding rivers and various islands and bridges. The major industry is paper-making but tourist highlights of the town include the Ringerikes Museum housed in an old rectory that was once the site of a battle between the troops of Norway and Sweden. Today it has a notable collection of Viking rune stones. Elsewhere, the Fengselet park and restaurant is situated in a former prison.
