You'll find the town of Halden on the Swedish border in south eastern Norway, 75 miles south east of the capital Oslo. It stands at the point that the Tista River meets the Iddefjord and close to the most southern road border crossing between the two countries on the Rv22 main road from Halden. If you rent a car in Halden you'll be able to explore the scenic surrounding area of lakes, rivers, forests and islands that are popular for hiking, fishing and canoeing. Wildlife spotters should head for the areas around the villages of Prestebakke and Kornsjø.
One of Norway's two nuclear power stations, one of its tallest TV masts and the old and new Svinesund Bridges are unlikely renowned landmarks. Visitors who hire a car in Halden can see all these, plus the genuine tourist attractions. These include the picturesque old Victorian canal system and the 17th-century Fredricksen border fortress high on the cliffs above the city. Other highlights include Rod Herregard, a well-preserved 300-year-old manor house in gardens and the new Halden yacht marina with its harbor-side cafes and restaurants.
