The town of Fauske stands on the shores of Skjerstad Fjord in the far north west of Norway. It's 33 miles inland from Bodo, 155 miles south of Narvik and is at one of Norway's narrowest points - so the Swedish border is only 2 miles to the east.
The E6 coastal highway and railway mainline pass through the town. Visitors who hire a car in Fauske can explore the surrounding Salten region. For example, the Rv83 heading west from here travels along the picturesque fjord shore and passes through several tunnels. It's an area of immense natural beauty and includes two national parks, two glaciers, many lakes and mountains reaching over 6,ft high.
Fauske is a small community within the Arctic Circle so visitors who hire a car shouldn't expect a glamorous or stylish resort. Instead the city serves as a shopping and service hub for a remote area and as a base for visitors to explore the natural environment. That includes tours of some of the biggest caves in Europe, fishing by the midnight sun or trips to see the Northern Lights. Local marble quarries have supplied high quality stone for world monuments like the UN Building in New York and the Japanese Emperor's Palace. You'll find a small museum and shop about 'Norwegian Rose' marble in the city centre. Other attractions here include the open-air folk museum with a collection of historic buildings.
