Hertz at Evenes Airport

Harstad/Narvik Airport is a joint military and civilian airport at the village of Evenes in north-western Norway. It stands 30 miles south of Harstad and 50 miles west of Narvik on a narrow flat piece of land between two lakes and wooded hills. The smart modern terminal demonstrates this can be an international point of entry although most flights are domestic. Parking won't be a problem: there are 1,000 paid places. If you hire a car at Evenes airport you'll be able to get straight onto the E10 that heads inland to join the E6 Norwegian north-to-south spine road.

Evenes itself stands in a picturesque spot on the northern shore of the Ofotfjord. The village's prime attraction is the 200-year-old white wooden Evenese Church, designed so it looks like a small country manor house. Further afield, locals say it's an easy walk to the 3,730ft summit of Lilletinden Mountain nearby. You'll be rewarded with great views over the village and its watery landscape. Other highlights of the area include prolific trout and char lake fishing, sea angling in the fjord, an enormous cave called the ‘Troll Church' and relics of the German coastal fortifications from World War Two.
