The busy domestic airport at Brønnøysund stands on the western coast of Norway. It is just two miles southeast of the centre of the small town of Brønnøysund. Travellers arrive at a smart modern terminal with shops, a café and paid parking spaces outside. If you hire a car at the airport you'll find that it's a short drive into town along the Flyplassvegen, which crosses the Svarthopen inlet by bridge. Here you'll pick up roads heading further out into the islands or back inland towards the E6 north-to-south spine road. Brønnøysund is also a hub for ferry services to the outlying islands.
Brønnøysund is often considered to be right in the middle of Norway. Located about halfway up the massive west coast it's like a mini-version of the country, with its own fjord, mountain and waterfall. Visitors who pick up a hire car at Brønnøysund Airport can explore this coastal town that is almost completely surrounded by the sea. Island-hopping trips are popular. The landmark sight is the Torghatten Mountain, named the “troll's hat'. It's six miles from the town and looks like a hat with a hole in the middle, thanks to a fault through the heart of the rock.
