Bodø Airport and military ‘Air Station' share an airfield at the tip of a peninsular in north-western Norway. The airport is a small domestic facility, while the air station is the biggest air force base in the country. The airport is less than a mile from the town of Bodø; passengers can walk from the modern terminal building into the town centre. Visitors who hire a car at the airport, find that the road connections are as good as you can expect in this remote spot: the Rv-80 leads straight from the airport east to join the crucial E6 north-to-south highway further inland.
Bodø stands nearby the Arctic Circle and, if you hire a car at the airport, it's easy to explore the mountains, islands, lakes and forests which characterise Bodø. Saltstraumen's narrows, 20 miles south, create the world's strongest tidal currents. Tourists can stand and watch the almighty whirlpools created by powerful water flows. Bodø itself was completely rebuilt after the Second World War - even its cathedral is modern. Bodø is a compact town filled with the wonderful features of its harbour, railway terminal and airport.
