Andenes Airport stands in the far northwest of Norway on the island of Andoya, 190 miles inside the Arctic Circle. The airfield also serves as a Norwegian Air Force base. The two runways occupy the northern tip of the island and, for civilians, mainly handle Norwegian domestic flights. The small village of Andenes is right alongside as is the NR-82 road. Visitors who pick up a hire car at Andenes Airport find that this road runs south to eventually join the mainland and the city of Narvik. There's also a car ferry from Andenes to the island of Senja to the east.
With a hire car you can explore this remote northern island. The sparsely-populated Andoya covers 189 square miles but only has a few thousand residents. You can drive south to the even larger island of Hinnoya via the spectacular Andoy cantilever road bridge across the Risoysundet inlet that is a sight in itself. Andoya is renowned for its edible cloudberries and white sandy beaches. This is clearly not an area for nightlife and glamour, the attractions are all natural and outdoor. So visitors here are likely to explore the lakes and mountains of the islands, hiking, bird-spotting and fishing.
