Piazza Vittorio Veneto 33
**(Calls cost 7p per minute plus your phone company's access charge)
The main railway station for the Italian coastal city of Salerno stands on Piazza Vittorio Veneto next to the War Memorial. This impressive 19th-century building is conveniently near to the city centre and the waterfront. This makes it useful for travellers taking boats and ferries from the harbour. Visitors who pick up a hire car at the station find it's very handy for the road network too. The main Corso Giuseppe Garibaldi coastal route, or SS18, runs past the entrance to the station concourse and The Salerno ‘Tangenziale' ring road and the A3 motorway are a short drive to the north.
The city of Salerno stretches along a coastal strip facing the Gulf of Salerno. It has a typically Italian central historic quarter, where medieval churches, teenagers on mopeds and trattorias fill narrow cobbled streets, and the more modern leafy promenade along the waterfront is a picturesque highlight. If you hire a car from Salerno Station it makes a great base for exploring. The nearby Amalfi Coast road is famous for a reason: it's one of the most beautiful drives in the world. The road winds through pretty villages like Ravello, Positano and Amalfi itself clinging to spectacular cliffs above a sparkling blue sea.
