Located in Brittany in north-west France and founded over 2,000 years ago, is the commune of Vannes. Its railway station, Gare de Vannes dates back to the late 1800s with services to Quimper and Bordeaux. The area most famously features in literature, including one of the Three Musketeers novels by Alexandre Dumas and a story by Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
To get around easier, you may wish to consider hiring a car from Vannes Railway Station. This will ensure you don't miss a moment of what this pretty walled town has to offer.
A great deal of the old city of Vannes is still on display today, so be sure to explore the area and take in all of the beautiful sights, including the harbour. The old city walls of Vannes are a particularly impressive historical structure. Dating back to the medieval era, the walls still include many towers, bridges and gates from that period of history.
Be sure to take in St Peter's Cathedral which is a stunning example of a French Gothic cathedral, and features a Romanesque bell tower from the original construction in the 13th century.

Please note that from 15 Nov to 15 Apr many cities are required by law to restrict the circulation to only vehicles equipped with snow chains or winter tyres. For a summary of the orders, please visit www.poliziadistato.it. To comply with the regulations, in specific locations subject to this requirement, vehicles are equipped with snow chains - the price is included in the rental charges through the cost of "Winterization Fee". At pick-up if you decide to bring your own snow chains or do not intend on driving on the roads subject to this requirement, you may decline the equipment by signing the appropriate release form. This change will be reflected in the rental charges. For more information on the fees, please click here. In all other regions, we recommend that you check before renting if your journey includes one of the roads subject to this requirement and therefore request the snow chains, if necessary.
