Rouen is in the north-western territory of France and is famously the site where Joan of Arc was tried and burnt at the stake. Many tourists visit the city for this reason, but there's also a wealth of other attractions, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Rouen's Notre Dame Cathedral, and Le Gros Horloge. Rue du Gros Horloge is the site of the city's famous clock-tower and there's an abundance of shops and restaurants in this atmospheric and medieval part of town. It is recommended that you take up car hire from Rouen to really explore and experience the heart of Haute-Normandie's tourist scene.
If it's Joan of Arc you're interested in, head for the picturesque square named Place du Vieux-Marché, where you'll find the ultra-modern Church of St Joan of Arc; if you're wondering what the future's sacred buildings might look like, this is possibly as good an example as you'll find. Cathedrale Notre Dame de Rouen stands in stark gothic contrast, as one of the finest cathedrals in France, and don't miss the Musée des Beaux-Arts for a bit of culture. Alternately, if you are hiring a car from Rouen, then why not also visit Monet's House and Gardens in Giverny (an hour south on the A13).
