Rennes is the capital of Brittany in North West France. The city has some intriguing diversity in its architecture; the medieval fortifications, the half-timbered houses, and Saint-Pierre Cathedral contrast wildly with buildings such as Les Champs Libres – Rennes modern cultural home. Parklands are plentiful with tranquil spaces like the Thabor Gardens being particularly popular. Shopping facilities are interesting, modern and varied, particularly around Place de l'Hôtel de ville. If you take up car hire from Rennes you can head north towards the Brittany coast, or any number of intriguing attractions in the locality.
Place de l'Hôtel de ville, the Parliament of Brittany, and the Place de la République are good landmarks from which to get your bearings. Les Champs Libres is an important civic building, housing the library and a host of exhibition centres. The Thabor Gardens feature amongst the multitude of parks and gardens in the city. If you're hiring a car from Rennes, head towards the coast and visit attractions like La Bourbansais on the way – a beautiful chateau combined with a zoo just off the D137. Alternatively you can also follow the same road towards the mouth of the Rance, stopping at the beautiful village of Dinan.
