Marseille is a name that naturally conjures images of Cote d'Azur extravagance and classic French chic; which aren't unworthy for 2013's European Capital of Culture. The second largest city in France, Marseille stands at the western edge of what we would classify as the Cote d'Azur, just a short drive from Toulon, and a daytrip away from St Tropez.
In Marseille itself, you'll immediately see the magnificent Basilique de Notre Dame de la Garde; which overlooks the harbours from the highest natural point in the city. For an escape from the inner city, rent a car in Marseille and travel to the spectacular, rugged terrain of the Calanques, which span 20km east towards Cassis. Find our pickup point at 83 Boulevard National.
Marseille, with its rich culture, beaches and architecture is a city with hidden depths and one of the most visited cities in France. The old town, or ‘Panier' neighbourhood, is well worth exploring with its many cobbled streets, galleries, crafts, and designer goods, which nestle amongst the tall narrow houses. Contrasting with the ancient spectacles, the present day Opera House (Opéra Municipal de Marseille) has been described as the ‘soul mate' of the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris.
The Old Port itself, is another highlight of this great city. Filled with restaurants and shops surrounding the harbour, it's not to be missed. On the port's north side stands the largely titled Musée des Civilisations de l'Europe et de la Méditerranée. A newly built, world-class museum it's already establishing itself with some magnificent exhibitions. It's well worth a look even to see only its magnificent exterior. If travelling further afield, then renting a car in Marseille and enjoying the stunning natural surroundings of the Calanques du Sugiton and beyond will prove a worthwhile excursion.
