Dinan is considered one of the prettiest towns in France, with its medieval half-timbered architecture, cobbled streets and cosy taverns. Situated in northern France, Dinan gained prominence as the Rance's most northerly crossing point, but it is more of a rural river town than a bustling port. The medieval ramparts and the ornate Basilique St-Sauveur provide stunning architecture and the steep cobbles of the Rue du Petit-Fort and the Rue du Jerzual offer atmospheric old-world authenticity. Hiring a car from Dinan will allow you to visit the wider Brittany region, including the historic town of St. Malo.
Head to the Place des Merciers, set high on the banks of the Rance and in the heart of the old town. Wander down the hill to the picture-postcard Rue du Jerzual and the Basilique Saint-Sauveur. For a day out, take up car hire from Dinan and make a 20-minute drive on the D794 to the renowned La Bourbansais – a beautiful combination of a fairytale chateau with a zoo in the grounds.
Alternatively, take the D2 north to the lovely beaches of St Jacut before heading on for the enchanting Fort La Latte.
