Cognac is a town in western France which obviously has close links to the brandy industry. For tourists, this is an indicator of the rolling countryside and endless vineyards that surround the town. The churches and castles of the Charente department are all close-by, as well as charming destinations such as Angoulême and Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, making car hire from Cognac a great option to explore the wider region.
Cognac's Old Town is the most attractive part of the town, based around monuments like Saint-Jacques Tower and the Church of St Léger. Cognac Public Gardens are particularly appealing for a quiet afternoon.
Cognac is a particularly pleasant town due to its location on the banks of the Charente. Château des Valois (Cognac Castle) overlooks the river, along with the Saint-Jacques Towers; be sure to look out for François I's salamander symbol on many of the half-timbered buildings of the Old Town. The Museum of Art and History and Cognac Public Gardens are also a worthwhile detour.
If you're hiring a car from Cognac, Angoulême is a short drive east on the N141, whereas the Abbaye Fontdouce makes for a pleasant drive north-west on the D731. Be sure to take in the wonderful vineyards and countryside of Charente as you travel around the region.
