Boulogne sur Mer is a city in the Pas-de-Calais region of France. It enjoys pleasant coastal scenery and a strong tourist trade. The town's Belfry is UNESCO listed, and towers over the highest part of the city. The maritime attraction known as Nausicaa is also hugely popular with tourists. Boulogne played a huge part in both world wars, meaning that remembrance tourism is naturally popular.
Car hire from Boulogne sur Mer means you can visit Pas-de-Calais' best beaches, and enjoy the scenery of the Parc Naturel Régional des Caps et Marais d'Opale, which sits just to the east of the city.
The French coastlines have some of the best sea-life and maritime museums in the world and Nausicaa ranks highly amongst these. Notre Dame Church (not to be confused with Paris' Notre Dame) and the medieval castle/museum are high on tourist agendas. Notre Dame is one of the most striking cathedrals in Northern France due to its hilltop position, looming ornately over the city. The city's famous Belfry also stands out as a major landmark.
Around 45 minutes away, along the N42, driving through the Parc naturel régional des Caps et Marais d'Opale is the La Coupole. This bizarre hill top bunker is now a 3D planetarium and museum.
