Arles is a city located in the south of France, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. It is a former Roman colony, and as such contains a number of well-preserved Roman ruins which are worth visiting. The ruins, which include an amphitheatre and aqueduct, have been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since the 80s. Action movie fans may recognise the city from the popular film ‘Ronin' starring Robert De Niro, Jean Reno and Sean Bean. By hiring a car from Arles, visitors can explore the city at their own pace and catch all of the sights, travelling further out to explore the wider area.
On Wednesdays and Saturdays each week, the city has an open air market which is widely regarded in the region as one of the best, and visitors should definitely hunt down great food and bargains. If you are travelling at the right time of year you may also see the fine French photography festival, Rencontres d'Arles, which takes place each summer. Once you've taken in all that the city has to offer, venture out to the Regional Nature Park of the Camargue for the day. This wetlands is a stunning area of natural beauty, home to much beautiful fauna and flora. If you're lucky, you might catch a glance of the Camargue horses and flamingos when you're hiking through the area.
