The city of Frederikshavn stands on the east coast of the island of Vendsyssel at the top of the Jutland peninsular in Denmark. ‘Frederick’s harbour’ is an important ferry port with direct sailings to Norway and Sweden, there are sailings to Danish tourist islands too. One of the best is Hirsholm, a leafy island with old fortifications, a lighthouse, prolific birdlife, beaches and quaint cottages. Vendsyssel has plenty of tourist attractions that can easily be reached if you have a hire car. The area’s highlights include seaside resorts like Sæby, Løkken and Lønstrup, and historic Hirtshals, with its enormous Nordsøen Aquarium.
