The city of Frederikshavn stands on the east coast of the island of Vendsyssel at the top of the Jutland peninsular in Denmark. 'Frederick's harbour' is an important ferry port with direct sailings to Norway and Sweden, there are sailings to Danish tourist islands too. One of the best is Hirsholm, a leafy island with old fortifications, a lighthouse, prolific birdlife, beaches and quaint cottages. Vendsyssel has plenty of tourist attractions that can easily be reached if you have a hire car. The area's highlights include seaside resorts like Sæby, Løkken and Lønstrup, and historic Hirtshals, with its enormous Nordsøen Aquarium.
Visitors who hire a car in Frederikshavn can tour the city's sights easily, the roads are generally clear and there is plenty of free parking. The city's history as a naval stronghold is shown at the Bunker Museum, which is housed in World War Two fortifications, and the round Gunpowder Tower, which dates back to the 17th century. Elsewhere, the modern Cloos Tower is a local landmark with great views over the city, while the Fiskerklyngen is a pretty cluster of historic fishermen's cottages. Don't miss Bangsbo Museum, which is housed in an old moated manor house with attractive gardens and an adventure playground.
