The city of Redencao (or 'Redemption') stands in the State of Ceará, in the northeast of Brazil. It's not to be confused with Redencao in the State of Para or the suburb of the city of Sao Paulo with the same name. Redencao of Ceara stands inland, amid mountains and sugarcane plantations. If you hire a car in Redencao you can take a trip to Sitio Livramento, a plantation museum showing how black slaves lived and worked. Further afield, the seaside town of Fortaleza is only 4 miles north and makes a good day trip, with its colonial Portuguese architecture, museums and beaches.
This city was the first in Brazil to free its slaves; hence its name. If you hire a car in Redencao you'll soon find that it has become a tourist destination. The visitor highlights include three grand main squares, two impressive museums and its amazing natural location. The Mountain of Saint Rita can be reached right from the city and gives a breath-taking view over Redencao and its surroundings. Look also for the beautiful Acarape do Meio Lake in the hills. Everywhere there are monuments and exhibitions telling the story of how the slaves were freed in 1883, five years before the rest of the country.
