Brazil's east coast holiday region of Porto Seguro is served by the busy Aeroporto do Porto Seguro, sometimes called the Safe Harbour Airport. This international airport, with its low-rise passenger terminal sporting a traditional clay tiled roof, stands just a mile west of the city centre. It stands between the Rio Buranhém at one end of the runway and the Atlantic Ocean, which is just a few hundred yards from the other end. If you hire a car at Porto Seguro Airport you'll find that from the terminal and its car park, the Ladeira do Aeroporto leads directly west towards the city centre and waterfront.
If you drive a hire car into town from Porto Seguro Airport you'll soon find this is one of Brazil's most popular tourist resorts. It's the country's oldest town and is packed with Portuguese colonial architecture. At night the Old Quarter is floodlit and over-whelmed by lively street life, with pavement bars and restaurants, and a party atmosphere fuelled by the local speciality ‘Capeta', a guarana-flavoured cocktail. The first land spotted by Portuguese explorers is now Monte Pascoal National Park and you'll find a huge range of attractions round the city, ranging from Aquarium Island in the Buranhém Island to Brazil's first church.
