The town of Linhares stands on the southeast coast of Brazil. It is in the State of Espirito Santo, 8 miles northeast of the state capital Vitoria and 4 miles northeast of Rio de Janeiro. If you hire a car in Linhares you'll soon notice that all of them are linked by the main BR-11 coast road. You'll also be able to tour the area. The highlights include the lovely Nature Reserve in the Valley of the river Doce, a well-organised family friendly park with nature trails, and the Tamar Turtle project, where you can see leatherback turtles on the beach at night.
Linhares is a quiet market town dominated by agriculture, sitting on the river Doce in an area of lakes and lagoons 20 miles from the river's mouth. It's not really a tourist destination, the beaches are at the ocean to the east and you'll need a hire car to reach them. In the city itself there's a smart central green area, the Praca 22 de Agosto with a playground and outdoor gym, and that array of more than 60 lakes to explore. The pick of them might be Juparana, which has an acclaimed sandy freshwater beach.
