Presidente Juscelino Kubitschek International Airport is seven miles south of the city of Brasília. It stands in a specially cleared and landscaped site near the prestigious residential area of Lago Sul. Named after a former national president, it is now a large modern airport with two passenger terminals and acts as a major air hub for the country, handling more than 14 million passengers a year. If you hire a car at Lago Sul you'll find the road connections are excellent, with easy access to all areas of the federal capital.
The capital of Brazil was a completely new city built in the fifties and sixties. Brasília has grown to become a thriving city of almost three million residents and its planned futuristic architecture and infrastructure have led to it being designated a World Heritage Site. Visitors who hire a car from Lago Sul will be able to quickly drive to the heart of the city from the airport thanks to the city's legendary road network, including its six-lane highways. Further afield you'll find the residential districts laid out around leafy green areas but the centre is where the most impressive formal government buildings are found. Taking a drive around these monumental structures is well recommended.
