The town of Kitzbühel stands in the Austrian Alps near the northern border with Germany, 6 miles east of Innsbruck (via the A12) and 8 miles south of Munich (via the A8). If you hire a car here You'll be able to tour round the region. In the winter, it's a snow sports centre; in the summer, there are natural attractions like the Schwarzsee Lake and footpaths in the mountains, which also attract climbers and extreme sports enthusiasts. There are attractive towns nearby too. Pretty Kufstein has a castle to visit and Zell am See stands along the shores of a scenic lake.
Kitzbühel itself is a small medieval market town in a steep river valley between mountains, offering narrow streets lined with historic churches, old houses and designer shops. In the winter it turns into one of Austria's leading ski resorts. With a hire car in Kitzbühel it's easy to get around the 56 chair lifts and 120 miles of ski slopes. There are also 30 miles of cross-country skiing trails, facilities for curling, tennis and golf, and hundreds of ski-oriented hotels. In summer it's much quieter of course, but there are plenty of hiking and mountain bike trails available in the mountains.
