The small town on Ischgl stands in the far east of Austria, in the Tyrolean Alpine valley of Paznaun. This is prime winter sports territory and Ischgl's ski areas link with others crossing the border into nearby Switzerland. If you hire a car in Ischgl you'll be able explore all these very mountainous areas. It's just part of one of the world's largest ski zones. Other villages in the Paznaun valley have their own ski runs too, like Galtür and Kappl. The best historic town for day trips is Landeck with its prominent castle, history museum and galleries.
Ischgl stands at 1377m (4517ft) above sea level and has impressive winter-sports facilities including 45 chair lifts and 130 miles of well-groomed ski runs. If you hire a car in Ischgl you'll be able to get around the town and the ski facilities easily. Ischgl is also renowned for its après-ski nightlife, thanks to very lively bars and big-name concerts. Some of the lifts to the slopes start right in the village. Ischgl itself is essentially a collection of mountain chalets around narrow streets packed with clubs, bars and shops aimed at winter sports fans. And, of course, the focus shifts to mountain bikes and hiking in the summer.
