Key motorways in and around Blackpool

• M55 – the only major motorway that is connected to Blackpool. It begins in the southwest of the town, continuing east and linking with the outskirts of Preston, eventually connecting to the M6.
• M6 – travels several miles to the east of the town centre. It’s the main north-south motorway in the North West and connects Blackpool with Carlisle in the north and continues south into the Midlands and Birmingham.
• M61 – is also several miles to the west of Blackpool and can be reached via the M6. It’s the main route that runs from south Preston and links to the M60 in northwest Manchester.

Main roads in Blackpool

• A583 – also known as the Kirkham Bypass, links Preston to Blackpool, passing Kirkham and takes you into the town centre.
• A585 – is referred to as Amounderness Way and is a major road that links Kirkham to Fleetwood on the north coast.
• A5073 – Waterloo Road, connects from the A583 in Blackpool toward the Promenade (A584) by the sea.

How to get to…

Preston

You can drive to Preston in around half an hour, via the M55 and A6. From Blackpool, just take the A583 to reach the M55. Then, at Junction 1, take the A6 into central Preston. There are two Hertz van hire locations available for drop-off, on Wigan Road and Craven Drive.

Manchester

Manchester city centre is approximately one hour away from Blackpool via the M55 and M61. You can find the University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Salford in the city centre. Lancaster University

University of Liverpool

The University of Liverpool can be found around 90 minutes south from Blackpool town centre via the M55, M6 and M62.
