My next destination takes me to Vejer de la Frontera, one of the most beautiful white villages in Andalusia, which immediately captivated me with its breathtaking views of the coast and its charming old town. I was particularly impressed by the Moorish castle Castillo de Vejer, built in the 11th century and expanded over the centuries. The Parish Church of Divino Salvador, with its mix of Moorish and Spanish styles, was another highlight.
The narrow streets, traditionally white houses adorned with colorful flowers, and the picturesque Plaza de España give the place a charming, almost fairy-tale character. Every corner seems to tell a story.

Especially in the evening light, the place exudes a very special charm. It is the perfect place to relax, immerse yourself in the Andalusian way of life, and experience authentic Spain.
Barbate: The Taste of the Sea
From Vejer, I continue to Barbate, a charming fishing village between Tarifa and Cádiz, surrounded by long, golden beaches, rocky coves, and pine forests. The heart of Barbate is the harbor, lined with traditional fishing boats. This small, white town is particularly known for its tuna fishing tradition, which dates back to a 3,000-year-old method where tuna are lured into a labyrinth of nets and then hauled aboard the fishing boats. These tuna mostly end up in Japan, but of course, also on the plates of the surrounding traditional restaurants. I couldn't resist trying a portion in one of the small fish restaurants at the harbor – my culinary highlight!
During the day, people spend a lot of time at Playa El Carmen, a city beach that is especially popular with locals in the summer. Those who prefer a quieter spot will appreciate Playa Hierbabuena, which is more natural, less touristy, and thus ideal for relaxing.
There are some interesting excursion destinations in the area. I found Cape Trafalgar with its lighthouse particularly fascinating, not only because of the breathtaking view but also because of its historical significance. A little further north is the La Breña y Marismas del Barbate Natural Park, with its hiking trails leading to the best viewpoints, from which you can enjoy a panoramic view of the sea, the extensive pine forests, and the cliffs.
All in all, Barbate was a wonderful place to relax and enjoy. Especially in the narrow streets of the old town – away from the larger tourist spots – you can still feel the authentic Andalusian flair. A real insider tip!
