The 5 Best Travel Destinations on the West Coast of Andalusia

Andalusia, the sunny south of Spain, attracts travelers from all over the world year after year with its breathtaking nature and history. Here, the wild Atlantic coast meets picturesque villages that have their roots deeply anchored in the past. Andalusia is not only a paradise for nature lovers and culture enthusiasts but also for those who seek the charm of a road trip. And what could be better than discovering Andalusia with an electric rental car? Those looking for a reliable car rental in Spain can book an electric car through Hertz upon arrival in Málaga and start their journey sustainably.

In this post, I will take you on a journey through Andalusia, which not only includes some of the most beautiful excursion destinations in the region but also shows you how you can experience all these highlights in an eco-friendly way – with an electric rental car from Hertz.

Arrival in Málaga: The Perfect Starting Point

The journey through Andalusia begins in picturesque Málaga, a lively coastal city known as the gateway to the Costa del Sol. Málaga Airport is excellently connected, making it the perfect starting point for a road trip. To travel in an environmentally conscious way, I chose an electric rental car in Málaga. The Polestar 2, which I picked up, combines innovative technology and high comfort – the perfect companion for my exploration of Andalusia.

Hertz Car Rental

The powerful sedan impresses with its range of over 470 kilometers (WLTP), giving me the freedom to explore the picturesque landscapes of Andalusia without constantly thinking about charging stops. The vehicle not only offers an eco-friendly alternative to the traditional gasoline car but also provides a quiet and relaxed ride – perfect for fully enjoying the beauty of the Andalusian landscape. Those who choose an electric rental car in Málaga can also rely on an increasingly well-developed charging infrastructure, making travel in this beautiful region even more enjoyable.

Wind, Waves, and Charging: Kitesurfing and Recharging in Tarifa

The second day of my journey begins with an exciting kitesurfing adventure in Tarifa, one of the best spots for this sport in all of Europe. The wind here is constant and strong – ideal conditions for both beginners and experienced kitesurfers alike.

The best part: Nearby (right on the N-340, Km 76, 11380 Casas de Porro, Cádiz), there is a charging station that I quickly found using the Shell Recharge app. I find it particularly convenient that the app not only shows me nearby charging stations but also provides real-time information on availability and prices. This way, I can easily decide where and at what price to charge without worrying about the next station. The simple handling and the ability to make payments directly via my smartphone perfectly round off the user experience – a real relief for me on my journey! With the charging card, which was handed to me directly on the keychain as a Hertz keychain, I can conveniently start the charging process.

While the electric car is being charged directly at the kitesurfing hotspot, I enjoy the wonderful view of the sea and the impressive kitesurfers gliding over the waves. This way, recharging my rental car becomes a pleasant and special break that perfectly fits into the day.

A Walk Through Tarifa's History

On my third day in Tarifa, exploring the historic old town is on the agenda. Tarifa is known for its beautiful old town, characterized by a medieval city wall and the imposing Castillo de Guzmán el Bueno fortress. Walking through the narrow streets of this charming town feels like traveling back in time.

The fortress not only offers a fascinating insight into the region's history but also a spectacular view of the African continent, which is only about 14 kilometers away. On clear days, you can see the coastline of Morocco – a truly unique sight! From the fortress, you can sense Tarifa's historical significance as a strategic point in maritime history.

Tarifa has a special blend of history and modern elements, making the city so unique. The picturesque streets, white houses, and cozy cafés invite you to enjoy the day and soak up the relaxed atmosphere.

Punta Paloma: A Hidden Paradise on the Costa de la Luz

My road trip continues: The next destination is Punta Paloma, a lesser-known but all the more impressive spot near Tarifa. This small, secluded bay on the Costa de la Luz immediately enchanted me. Surrounded by impressive dunes and a wide, golden sandy beach, the place feels almost like a secret paradise – quiet, untouched, and far from the hustle and bustle of tourist hotspots.

The sand dunes, rising up to 30 meters behind the beach, offer a spectacular view of the sea and the surrounding nature. The water here is crystal clear and perfect for swimming. There are also some rocks that are ideal for snorkeling tours. If you seek more seclusion, you can walk along the coast and find quiet corners that make you feel completely alone with nature.

For me, the day was a real highlight of my trip: Punta Paloma is a place where you can let your soul dangle and forget everything around you. This quiet corner of Andalusia is definitely a place that every traveler should visit on their tour through the region.

Vejer de la Frontera: A Jewel of Andalusia's White Villages

My next destination takes me to Vejer de la Frontera, one of the most beautiful white villages in Andalusia, which immediately captivated me with its breathtaking views of the coast and its charming old town. The white village, perched on a high plateau, is unique not only because of its location but also because of its historical landmarks. I was particularly impressed by the Moorish castle Castillo de Vejer, built in the 11th century and expanded over the centuries. The Parish Church of Divino Salvador, with its mix of Moorish and Spanish styles, was another highlight.

The narrow streets, traditionally white houses adorned with colorful flowers, and the picturesque Plaza de España give the place a charming, almost fairy-tale character. Every corner seems to tell a story.

Vejer de la Frontera is not only known for its architecture but also for its small, charming cafés, tapas bars, and regional delicacies, such as "tortillitas de camarones" (shrimp fritters), the world-famous Iberico ham, and, of course, the renowned sherry varieties of the region.

For me, visiting Vejer de la Frontera was an absolute delight, both because of the historical atmosphere and the natural beauty of the surroundings and its almost meditative ambiance. Especially in the evening light, the place exudes a very special charm. It is the perfect place to relax, immerse yourself in the Andalusian way of life, and experience authentic Spain.

Barbate: The Taste of the Sea

From Vejer, I continue to Barbate, a charming fishing village between Tarifa and Cádiz, surrounded by long, golden beaches, rocky coves, and pine forests. The heart of Barbate is the harbor, lined with traditional fishing boats. This small, white town is particularly known for its tuna fishing tradition, which dates back to a 3,000-year-old method where tuna are lured into a labyrinth of nets and then hauled aboard the fishing boats. These tuna mostly end up in Japan, but of course, also on the plates of the surrounding traditional restaurants. I couldn't resist trying a portion in one of the small fish restaurants at the harbor – my culinary highlight!

During the day, people spend a lot of time at Playa El Carmen, a city beach that is especially popular with locals in the summer. Those who prefer a quieter spot will appreciate Playa Hierbabuena, which is more natural, less touristy, and thus ideal for relaxing.

There are some interesting excursion destinations in the area. I found Cape Trafalgar with its lighthouse particularly fascinating, not only because of the breathtaking view but also because of its historical significance. A little further north is the La Breña y Marismas del Barbate Natural Park, with its hiking trails leading to the best viewpoints, from which you can enjoy a panoramic view of the sea, the extensive pine forests, and the cliffs.

All in all, Barbate was a wonderful place to relax and enjoy. Especially in the narrow streets of the old town – away from the larger tourist spots – you can still feel the authentic Andalusian flair. A real insider tip!

Conil de la Frontera – A Hidden Gem on the Andalusian Coast

The last stop of my journey takes me to Conil de la Frontera in the province of Cádiz. The town impresses with its endless, clean beaches and picturesque old town. I particularly enjoyed walking along Playa de la Fontanilla for hours and soaking in the relaxed atmosphere. A must-see is the Torre de Guzmán, a watchtower from the 14th century. The climb was absolutely worth it, as you can enjoy a fantastic view over the town and the sea from the top. Right next to it is the town museum, where I learned more about the history of Conil – from the Phoenicians to the significance of fishing in the region. The historical importance of Conil fascinated me, as did the culinary highlights of the town. In the many restaurants and tapas bars in the old center, delicious local dishes such as grilled tuna and squid stew are offered. The town center of Conil de la Frontera is lively but never overcrowded – the perfect spot for a relaxed seaside vacation that offers both culture and nature. Speaking of which, those who want to start their journey in Conil can also book an electric rental car in Cádiz through Hertz.
